Plantain (Plantaginaceae)Dialect

The young leaves of plantain can be boiled and mixed with rice, or used in dishes such as ohitashi (blanched greens) and aemono (seasoned salads).
Additionally, its flower spikes are said to be effective as a gargle for sore throats.
Reiko Hisamatsu, a woman born in the Taisho era from the Ogura area, once said, "When brewed into a tea, it helps when you have difficulty urinating."
In the past, plantain was a common wild plant growing along roadsides, but in recent years, due to road development, it has become less frequently seen.
