Japanese Name: Kakidoshi (Lamiaceae Family)

The fruit is edible from August to October.
When peeling off the prickly and slightly irritating outer shell, a white, bean-like fruit appears inside, which can be eaten.
In local dialect, it is called "Kashimame" (literally "confectionery bean"), a name derived from its edible seeds.
Dried seeds can be crushed and added to pickles, where they are praised for their "fragrant and delicious flavor."
